Practice is sometimes fun, sometimes drudgery, ALWAYS NECESSARY! The best way to make practice time more enjoyable and productive is to get a regular habit of everyday practice established. LOOK FOR IMPROVEMENT; don’t just “put in your time”. When your playing improves, then all the time spent practicing will seem worthwhile.
A good practice routine would be structured along the following lines: 7 minutes: Warm-up and Flexibility 5 minutes: Scales or Rudiments 8 minutes: Band Music 8 minutes: Solo/Lesson Work 2 minutes: Warm-down Concentrate on getting a GOOD SOUND! It makes no difference how fast, loud, or high you can play if the tone is not enjoyable to listen to. NEVER SACRIFICE ACCURACY FOR SPEED! Practice the parts that you cannot play. It makes no sense to practice the spots you can already play well. ADD TO THE BAND’S SOUND, NEVER DETRACT FROM IT! Practice to be perfect. REMEMBER: Regular, daily practice for short periods of time (20-30 minutes) is best. Click on the RESOURCES link above to find some tools that will help in your quest for improvement. A huge congratulations goes out to the 22 Vela Band students that earned a chair in the Region 28 All-Region Band. To all those who participated in the audition, your directors are very proud of your hard work and dedication! View the gallery of photos HERE.
On Friday, January 22nd, composer William Owens stopped by the Vela Band Hall while on a trip down to the valley. Mr. Owens was the Vela Band's 1st ever head director back when the name of the school was Paredes Line Ninth Grade campus. This year, both Concert Band A and B will be performing pieces composed by Mr. Owens at our annual contests.
